Holistic Growth is the Key to Successful Treatment of Alcoholism
Successful treatment of alcoholism is something that remains elusive for many people. The problem is not so much in finding a program that actually works, because there are several of them out there that can help a person to achieve sobriety.
And the problem is not necessarily one of will power, because this basically becomes a non-issue when an alcoholic fully surrenders to the fact that they cannot drink like a normal person can.
Basically, the problem is that people who aspire to recover from alcoholism do not put in the work. They do not have the level of conviction, the willingness, and the dedication needed to make recovery work for them.
They say that it is not about willpower, and that anyone can recover if they only surrender. This is a bit misleading. Anyone who truly surrenders to their addiction has to also have the energy to carry out a recovery plan. They have to be willing to take a long, hard look at themselves and make incremental improvements. Sometimes drastic improvements.
An addiction treatment center is one such place to start this process. But it is not a necessity. The same is true of AA, the 12 step program that just about any rehab will introduce you to as the solution to your problem.
Rehab is not necessary. AA is not necessary.
What is the secret then? Creating a new life in recovery. Finding passion and purpose in living without alcohol, and without self medicating. This is the path to recovery. Personal, holistic growth that continues on in recovery, year after year. So many who get complacent in recovery end up relapsing, because they do not push themselves to keep growing. Relapse happens not because of resentment, but because of boredom. Acceptance of self becomes a trap for recovering alcoholics, one that eventually leads them back to drinking if they are not careful.
The solution is holistic growth.
Why holistic? Because it is the only kind that is sustainable. Other forms of growth are too specific and can lead to burn out. For example, spiritual growth can only take you so far in recovery, and then you have to explore outside of those boundaries to make further leaps. For example, regular, vigorous exercise can be a huge factor in someone’s recovery, but most traditional programs would not discover this, nor would they endorse it. “The solution is spiritual,” they claim, but their success rate is miserably low.
The solution is holistic. Explore new avenues of growth.
