I will be ten months sober tomorrow. I was a HUGE isolator as I used alcohol by myself at home everyday. I shut everything else out! And, this is the life that I was left with as I sobered up. I even quit working because I couldn't handle the stress of it all and spent each moment either drinking OR thinking about drinking. It was a miserable existence! My life came to a halt, I was hallow inside and it has been EXTREMELY difficult for me to help myself move beyond this way of life. It's like a mental block...
So now, ten months later, I am sober, I am certainly healthier (lost 20 pounds, eat much better, run everyday, etc) and I am getting out more in social situations and I am proud of where I am today, but I know that I am at a place where I need to push myself harder because I, for the most part, still live in that old alcoholic template that I built over the past many years... I am still not working. My TV habits are exactly the same as when I drank. Dinner is still the biggest part of my day. I still get anxious before social interaction and it can be a struggle for me to choose being out there with people vs. staying home by myself. So I have a lot of work to do.
So I have decided to hire a life coach to help me get out of my own head and onto a better path. I have decided that I need help because I have not been able to do this myself with grit and resolve. I am stuck in "inaction" and I admit it. I am having issues moving beyond my alcoholic lifestyle habits. My biggest fear today isn't that I am going to drink; my biggest fear today is that I am NOT going to be able to help myself transition into a comfortable / fulfilling sober existence. So I am going to lean on a professional to help me learn how to live the life that I want to live as a sober guy and I can't wait. I am going to learn how to live a life of "action" by doing it!
I want to mention here that hiring a professional life coach is only a part of my recovery - not ALL of my recovery. I know none of this would ever matter if I picked up a drink again.
Thanks again for your post Patrick!
