Stop Smoking Pills

Are stop smoking pills the answer for your addiction to cigarettes and nicotine?  For some people, they can certainly help.  Let’s take a look at the options.

First of all there are pills such as Zyban (which is otherwise known as Wellbutrin).  This pill has been around for a while and it is actually used as an antidepressant as well.  It works by reducing your urge to smoke, and it takes a bit of time before the pill really kicks in and helps you much.  Now based on some of the studies that have been done, Zyban is not the most effective stop smoking pill out there.  Other pills have shown more promise in helping the most smokers.  However, some smokers have quit successfully using this pill, and it does work for some people.  If it fits your situation in terms of needing an antidepressant in your life, then this might be a winning combination for  you.

Another pill for quitting smoking is Chantix.  This pill has been shown to be a bit more effective than Zyban in some of the studies that have been done.  In fact, it is probably the leading pill on the market right now for quitting smoking.  Like with any medication, however, there are some side effects, and some of them that you might experience with Chantix are not so great.  Plus, quite a large percentage of people who do try Chantix end up stopping it because of the adverse side effects that they experience.  But if you do try the pill and don’t seem to be bothered much with side effects, then it can really help you out a lot.

Now there are other pills to help you quit smoking on the market and all the rest of them are junk.  All of them are basically sold under either the vitamin market or under the herbal market and so they are not really drugs at all, but instead they are supplements.  Most of them will be some sort of blend of herbs that will claim to treat your withdrawal symptoms from nicotine.  For example, because most people become irritable and restless during nicotine withdrawal, there might be an herb like lavender or something packaged into these type of quit smoking pills.  If you really stop and think about it these types of pills are a ridiculous gimmick and they don’t do a darn thing for anyone.  It would be nice if there were some herb that magically treated the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal, but sadly this is not the case.  Stay away from these type of pills because they are merely gimmicks that will not really help you.  Instead, talk with your doctor about the other two options and good luck with your quit.

I have tried chantix and it didn’t work for me. How ever I did get commit a few years ago and I quit for 2 years. I’m back smoking of course and wondering why commit is not available.I really need to quit. Do you have any other suggestions for a pill that might help me quit? I sure would appreciate one. Thank you

@ Billie Paine – my thought is that you should try to quit as close to cold turkey as possible, especially without using NRT products (nicotine replacement therapies).

I recommend Tea Tree chewing sticks (buy them at the health food store).

Also, you might try a spoonful of Cream of Tartar mixed into a glass of orange juice. Drink that when you first wake up and later on in the day once as well.

I’m also a big fan of exercise as a way to replace the “happy chemicals” in your brain.

And finally, I suggest that you sleep through the worst part of your withdrawal. If you don’t know how to do that, then figure out how many hours into quitting is the peak of your withdrawal, and then time it so that you have not slept for AT LEAST 36 hours up till then. That way, you will sleep through the worst of it, and wake up a true non-smoker!
