Meth Recovery

Is it possible to achieve meth recovery and start living a new life without drugs?  Many people get discouraged when they try to get clean from a drug like this, because they underestimate the amount of change that is really required in order to break free from the addiction.

Anyone can stop using meth for a few days.  The key is in staying off the drug in the long term.  How can a person learn how to do this?

One way is to start attending 12 step meetings on a regular basis.  There are a few benefits to doing so, though the program of NA is not for everyone.  For example, you can get a lot of support from others in the fellowship of NA, and it is basically free to attend the meetings.  Plus they are pretty much everywhere and available to anyone.

Some people thrive on this social support.  Others do not do well with it and continually relapse in spite of the support.

Now the other part of the equation is the program itself.  Working through the steps and applying them in your life can give you a foundation for recovery and a method for staying clean in the long term.  Again, this will give mixed results, and certainly does not work for everyone.

What is actually key in all of this is finding the passion and the purpose to live a drug free life in the long run.  Without this passion in your life, then you will naturally fall back on the drugs at some point.  Even if you work a 12 step program of recovery, you still have to face this long term problem of possible complacency setting in.  Many people in 12 step programs have admitted that complacency was what drove them to relapse eventually.

How can you avoid complacency?

Personal growth.  Holistic growth.  You have to keep pushing yourself to grow as a person in recovery.  That means exploring new avenues of growth.

A lot of recovering addicts get stuck in only pursuing spiritual growth.  This is a huge mistake that can cost them their sobriety in some cases.

Much better is to pursue holistic growth.  This means trying to grow in different ways.  For example:

1) Working on personal relationships and eliminating toxic relationships from your life.

2) Exercising and eating healthier.

3) Eliminating bad habits such as smoking cigarettes.

4) Pursuing spiritual growth.

5) Seeking emotional stability in your life.

And so on.  These are the kinds of things that are necessary to strengthen your long term recovery from meth.
