Is it Right to Make Fun of Drunk People?

I have no problem poking a bit of fun at drunk people because I earned the right to do so long ago. Yes it is still tragic in a way, but if you cannot laugh at yourself then you are probably in the wrong state of mind. I can appreciate a video like this and laugh about it today because I paid my dues. I have been there where this poor soul is at, I’ve tried to buy more booze when I could barely walk and I know the struggle he is going through. So yeah, I can laugh at him and I can laugh at myself. Thank goodness that I found a path to sobriety eventually and obviously I hope that this guy can do the same.

Once you are living a life of sobriety, it is pretty easy to look back and laugh at these things.  Of course alcoholism is a life or death matter, but you can eventually find the humor in it as well….IF you stick around long enough.  At some point you just do the best you can and try to help others too.  If funny stuff happens then you laugh about it.  No need to put on a false front and try to act all serious when someone is acting like a clown.  If it is funny, then laugh!

Now ultimately the goal should of course be to reach out and help the struggling alcoholic. There are times when this is impossible though, because they are just not ready for the help.  In fact, the majority of the time, people will not be ready to change their entire life.  It is a massive undertaking and they really have to hit bottom first.  What we might see as being a bottom in the drunk’s life might not be a big deal to them at all.  For example, this guy in the video might not really think much of this episode, if he even remembers it.  It is just another bump on his path; nothing of much consequence.

To some extent, we have to let people be where they are at in life.  You can laugh at them, or you can say it is sad, but ultimately they are going to find sobriety in their own time, or maybe not at all.  If you can help them along, that is great.  If not, just know that they are walking the path to recovery….as best they can.
