Following Up with Intervention Rehab and Getting the Addict the Help they Need

Anyone who is struggling and out of control with drugs and alcohol probably needs an intervention, rehab, and maybe a whole program of recovery so that they can find a new way to live.

The whole point of going to rehab following an intervention is to get your life back on track and quit using drugs and alcohol.  The goal is abstinence and the long term goal is a new way of life.  How can the addict or alcoholic best achieve these goals?

The whole key is to take action following the intervention and follow through with rehab. This is almost always the design of the intervention and if it is not set up this way then it probably should be.  You confront the alcoholic and convince them to go to rehab.  Then, of course, it is up to them to change their life for the better.

You can’t do it for them of course. They must do it themselves.  And that is the key word here: do.  They have to take action.  You can urge them to go to rehab and you can even get it all set up for them in advance and you can even drive them there and march them on in.  But ultimately it is up to them to take action.  They must participate and engage with others in rehab if they are going to change their life.  If they just go to rehab and go through the motions then nothing will change.  They will get out of treatment and go back to their old ways and nothing will be any different unless they take action.

Now why is it that some addicts succeed and some fail in recovery?  Seemingly some people do not do well and others do and yet it seems like both examples are putting forth an effort.  What is the magic ingredient?

The key to success in recovery is massive action. If you ask any recovering addict or alcoholic if they took massive action during their first year of sobriety they will tell you that yes, the most definitely did.  If they did not take seriously massive action then they would not have stayed clean and sober.  Simple as that.

So that is the whole key.  The addict must take massive action.  An example of this would be to go to rehab and then participate in the groups and network with the peers there.  Then they might follow up with long term rehab (pretty darn massive action) or they might just go to meetings every day and really connect with others in recovery on a regular basis.  It does not really matter what the details are as long as they take massive action.  That is the whole key to success.

If the addict is still in denial, then they will probably shun the idea of taking massive action in any way. They will not be willing to go to rehab, they will not be willing to attend meetings every day, and so on.  It is only after breaking through their denial that they will become willing to do what they have to do in order to achieve recovery.
