How to Stop Alcohol Use

If you want to know how to stop alcohol use then the first thing you should do is to try and stop drinking on your own. No need to make this more complicated than it needs to be. Just stop drinking.

If you get the shakes when you stop drinking suddenly then you should seek immediate medical attention. Going to rehab is your best bet. The ER will work in a pinch though.

So anyone who is truly addicted to alcohol is going to have a really hard time with stopping on their own. They might be able to do it for short periods of time, but they will always return to the bottle eventually. If this sounds like you, then you obviously need help in order to stop.

There is nothing wrong with needing help in order to stop drinking alcohol. Do not feel ashamed about this. Move past the shame and ask for help. It is not worth staying stuck in addiction just because you are too ashamed to ask for help.

In this case, asking for help probably means one of two things: either going to rehab, or going to AA (or both). There are other options out there, but for the most part, those are the 2 major paths that one could take.

I recommend using both of those suggestions in early recovery as a means of support. AA is not perfect, but it is widespread and the meetings are essentially free. You can’t really beat it for local support. There are other groups out there but they are few and far between. You will not find them in every city like you will AA.

The 12 step group of AA might have some problems or things that you take issue with, but those can easily be pushed to the side if you are dying from alcoholism. In the end, there are real people at the meetings who genuinely want to help you. Take advantage of that.

Going to rehab is much the same. Many of us alcoholics object to the idea for one reason or another. We have reasons and excuses of why we do not need rehab. Push these aside and go save your life. There is no shame in rehab. The staff and other clients there will treat you with respect.

These are my best two suggestions for how to stop using alcohol. There are other paths to take but none will get you started with the same level of success as these two can.
