How to Stay Off Marijuana
Do you want to know how to stay off marijuana? This can be a tough thing to accomplish because it is so easy to grab a quick hit of the stuff if you happen to be in a situation where it is being freely offered. In many cases you might even feel awkward to turn it down, so there can be pressure there too. How can you stay clean from it if your intention is to avoid the stuff? How can recovering addicts in particular say “no” to this drug consistently?
The first thing you should do in order to stay off this drug is to make a mental shift in your mind. What you need to do is to create a zero tolerance policy for yourself regarding the drug. You make an agreement in your mind that you will not smoke the drug no matter what. But then you need to go further than that and also make an agreement in your mind that you will not even entertain the though of doing so. Now of course our brains do what they want and you might find yourself day dreaming about the idea of smoking some marijuana. When you catch yourself doing so, you have to shut it down immediately. If you allow yourself the “luxury” of thinking about smoking then you will be miserable. You have to be strong enough mentally to shut down your mind any time it is romanticizing the idea of getting high. Do not allow your brain to go there. At all.
The second part of staying off marijuana involves replacing that part of your life with something else. Ideally what you want to do is find some passion and purpose in your life outside of using drugs. In the case of the recovering addict, this is best served by a connection with other addicts in recovery. In other words, if you want to stay clean and sober in the long run, then you have to find ways to help other addicts in recovery on a regular basis. Doing so will help to insure that you stay clean from drugs yourself.
The other part of the equation is that you must push yourself toward continuous growth. If you are lazy and stagnate and not pushing yourself then you are going to eventually smoke marijuana again. Why? Because using drugs is the natural state of a drug addict. It is our default response. We have to work hard to overcome it. If we don’t push ourselves then we will revert back to smoking.
