Caught the flu from my daughter... feeling really crappy today. But I'm going to try to get up and start over again tomorrow. Might be the next day, though, in reality. Keep it going, everyone! Awesome progress!

I watched a PBS special this weekend with Dr. Joel Furhrman and learned a great deal about nutrition and what he promotes, basically being a vegetarian and using food as medicine. He addresses food addictions and how to break them in just a few days using food. Google him when you get a chance. I made several of his recipes the last couple of days and I really do feel better. I was trying to do low carb/Atkins and he explained why it makes you feel bad, and how when you just eat right your health will return, no need to go extreme. I'm sold!

Erin, get well soon, and your daughter too!

Ken-Do you have his books? I looked at some of the recipes online and there are alot of ingredients in them. Some i would have difficultly finding. Can i asked what things you tried. Meatless, no/low carb meals?

Christy, I ordered his book Eat To Live but don't have it yet. Let me give you some information from the special and a few links that will make it simple. Check out this link first: http://www.drfuhrman.com/library/article17.aspx scroll down towards the bottom of the page and he has a chart of the healthiest foods, the higher the nutrient density the better. He has an acronym for the best foods, GOMBBS (rhymes with a comb for your hair), and it stands for Greens, Onions, Mushrooms, Beans, Berries, and Seeds. Eat as much of these as you want daily, make one of your meals a salad which you can add all of those ingredients to if you wish. Always eat your seeds as part of your salad to increase nutritional value, eat at least one small mushroom per day (or as many as you like), cut onions finely if you are going to cook them, choose a low calorie salad dressing, and that is the program in a nutshell. Here is another link that shows a plate with recommended percentages of each type of food (scroll down a little): https://www.drfuhrman.com/library/foodpyramid.aspx

I agree, his recipes are complicated, but in his special he just recommended eating those high nutrient foods I listed, as much of them as you like, raw or cooked. He pointed out that the low carb diets don't provide glycogen for your brain to use as fuel and if you don't eat any carbs, your body will break down muscle tissue for brain fuel. He's talking about eating those highly nutritional carbs, not bread, potatoes, pasta, etc., and also pointed out that a piece of chicken has the same nutritional value as white bread so limit meat to 10% of your food intake or two servings per week. (Yes, I took notes during the special.) Also, Whole Foods has adopted his food scoring system as what they recommend for their customers. Hope that helps some!

Oh yeah, I've been eating a salad daily, have made beans part of a least one meal per day, made mashed cauliflower instead of mashed potatoes, more water and less Diet Coke, boiled kale with garlic and onions, and made a 7 layer dip that I'm snacking on. Here's the recipe: 4 cups shredded lettuce on the bottom of a bowl, top with 3 mashed avocados mixed with 2 tablespoons lemon juice, 1 pint of plain Greek yogurt (I used fat free sour cream) mixed with a packet of taco seasoning, 1 can of black beans drained and rinsed, 3 diced tomatoes (or 2 cans drained), 2 cans of sliced black olives drained, and an 8 oz. packet of shredded 2% cheese. It's great! Alternate chips with celery sticks to cut down on the bad carbs.

    Hi everyone,

Day 6 morning workout complete. I didn't have time to post, but got a good workout in. I'm still definitely not a morning person though.

I'm taking a day off tomorrow to take the kids to the amusement park (Cedar Point), before school starts back up. The park opens late this time of year, so will have plenty of time for getting workout in before we leave.

    Take care, Todd

Ken-Thanks! I did check out those websites. I might have to order the book too. Being i "live" at the restaurant sometimes, it's difficult to eat healthy on the run all the time. I'm surrounded by homeade bread and buns daily, not good!
Made homeade veggie burgers a couple nights ago and they weren't bad. Have a little tweaking to do on them, otherwise very tasty. Lots of replacing greek yogurt in things that require cream and mayo.
Salad the last couple nights, but then again i added the tri color noodles. I just don't feel full without bread and pasta. I'll work on that though.

    Christy,

One more book I would recommend is "The Pleasure Trap", and of course, here is a link to the author discussing it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?featur...&v=nxf4kj8Rb6Y

    Good morning everyone,

Still a little stiff this morning, but day 9 = complete. Set some bread out to rise. Pick-up some corn and tomatoes at the farmer's market after Karate practice for the kids. The local grocery store has lobster on sale at $6.99/lb, if you pre-order (which I did already). So should be a nice cookout tonight. Having my mom and sisters over. Going to the wife's folks for big party over there tomorrow, too. Should be a good holiday weekend.

    Take care, Todd

Hey Sylvane, daily walking is great, everything else is just a bonus then.

I did about 30 minute walk on nature trail while kids were doing Karate yesterday. Got my morning workout in today = day 10 for that. Heading out to wife's folks for party and there is an art fair up there also, we'll check out.

    Take care everyone, Todd

Hey Sylvane and everyone, just finished up morning work out for day 11. Have a few things to take care of around the house, then head over to my mom's for picnic party. Should be plenty of kids there, so my boys will be well entertained.

You guys are awesome! Way to keep it going!!

Thank you for thinking of me, I finally got my daughter and myself well. The cough and sniffles seemed to hold on forever, but we kicked for good it this weekend.

Today was going to be my Day 1, again. I got up at 5 AM to get it in and then remembered that we were having a carry-in dinner today at work. One of our co-workers just found out she has cancer and starts chemo tomorrow, so this will be one of the last "feasts" she'll be able to enjoy for a while. It felt kind of important to me to participate. There are only 5 of us left in this office, it's kind of like a little family. We've all seen each other through a lot over the years. It sucks but she is being very strong and positive so far, I told her she is inspiring in the way she handled getting that kind of news!! Anyway... now that I've put it out here, tomorrow is my Day 1 (or maybe tonight, but definitely tomorrow), because I will feel like a jackass if I don't do it now. lol

    Have a great day!!

Thanks, Todd! Great job on your progress!

Day 2! Got a good 2 mile walk in last night, and my first day of the 30-Day Shred in this morning.

Day 3 done! Day 2 of The Shred I really focused today and thought about what I want to get out of this and I caught myself enjoying it a few times. lmao

Hope you're all still around and were just too busy to post yesterday! Have a wonderful day!

Oh, I forgot! A co-worker has this taped to her desk, and I thought it was cute (and true!) and that I would share:

Your body keeps an accurate journal, regardless of what you write down.
