Drugs Addiction Therapies and Strategies for Recovery

Those who are struggling with drugs addiction can do a couple of things to take care of their problem.  No single solution is vastly easier than the others and there are really no shortcuts, of course, but it is really just a matter of finding out what works for the individual and then applying that solution in your life.

There are a number of different drug addiction treatments and therapies that can be used to overcome addiction, and of course these can be combined in unique ways.  For example, you might use any of these types of drugs addiction treatments in your quest for recovery:

1) Inpatient drug rehab – This is where you would go and stay, inpatient, for several days or even several weeks, in order to get clean and sober.  There are groups every day, meetings, lectures, counselors, therapists, and of course other peers who are trying to recover as well.  This is probably the most expensive option, and it will generally be the most powerful option for most people.  There is also a lot of added flexibility in drug rehab because the therapist can set up the recovering addict for different solutions when it comes to aftercare.  In other words, this can be a starting point for any type of recovery therapy, including any of the other forms of treatment on this list.

2) Outpatient therapy – just like inpatient but the addict or alcoholic goes home to sleep each night, then returns back during the day for more groups and therapy.  Obviously, less expensive, and much more dangerous in terms of relapse.  Access to drugs and alcohol is the obvious difference here between inpatient and outpatient rehab.  With outpatient, you give up the protected environment in order to save money.

3) Counseling or therapy - Some people are terrified of groups, and much of traditional recovery is based on meetings and group therapy.  So a solution for some might be individual counseling.  In my experience, this is rare to see success if this is the case, and the more likely solution is for an individual to push past their fear and gain some exposure to groups, though this is not the solution that anyone wants to hear.  But in extreme cases, counseling or therapy alone might provide enough of a solution for an addict to break through to real recovery.

4) Drug therapy – Some addicts need drug maintenance therapy in order to stay off of street drugs.  A controversial solution, some would say that this does not even represent recovery.  Others see it as a necessary step for some hard core addicts.  Either way, it is another piece of the puzzle for some, and might become part of a recovery solution.
