3 Types of Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs
One of the best choices for struggling addicts and alcoholics in a time of need are drug and alcohol treatment programs. There are many different types of programs that can help someone who is addicted and the key is to keep going to them until you find one that works for you. Let’s take a look at some of the different treatment programs.
Traditional drug treatment programs – traditional recovery programs are going to be 12 step based programs of recovery that rely on AA or NA as the foundation for recovery. Most of the treatment center and substance abuse industry relies on the 12 step program as their solution for recovery. In fact, something like 90 percent or even higher of all treatment centers are 12 step based programs. So this is the traditional, default standard.
Is this a good thing? Yes and no. It certainly can and does work for many people, but the 12 step program is not a magic bullet by any means, and the vast majority of people who attempt to change their life with a 12 step program will end up failing. It is not clear yet that there are reasonable alternatives that are significantly better out there, however, and at this point there probably are not any such programs. That does not mean that there are not better paths in recovery–only that we have not implemented them on a wide scale yet. The 12 step program is still very much in its infancy–mostly due to the fact that it has changed very little.
Alternative drug rehab programs – alternative drug rehab is generally not going to use a 12 step program as the foundation, and will probably have a different and unique approach, such as behavioral counseling or maybe an holistic approach instead. There is no clear data that says that these approaches work any better than traditional recovery methods, however, but it can be a unique alternative to people who have tried and failed with the traditional route.
Christian drug rehab programs – there are religious based drug and alcohol programs available, and there are actually quite a few of them out there. Many of them are set up within or as part of a homeless shelter, but this does not necessarily make them any less effective. In fact, the success rates for these types of rehabs seem to run very close to that of other types of treatment. So for some people who are open to the idea of a religious solution, a Christian based rehab can make a lot of sense.
