Drug and Alcohol Rehab Program

A drug and alcohol rehab program is probably the best choice for anyone who is struggling with addiction or alcoholism.  Understand that rehab is not a magic bullet, but it is still the most helpful route in most cases. Of course, you have to be able to afford rehab and be willing to go to begin with.

A lot of addicts and alcoholics have an initial fear of going to rehab.  This is fully understandable.  There are a number of reasons why people have an aversion to treatment.  First of all it is a huge admission on their part of weakness.  Now whether or not this is really true is not the point.  People will explain that it makes them feel weak to have to ask for help.  Doesn’t matter if it is true or not.  Another reason that people are leery of going to rehab is because they are terrified of facing life without drugs and alcohol.  They believe that they will be miserable without the ability to self medicate.  Nothing that anyone says can convince them that they are going to find happiness in sobriety.  The addict will believe  that they are genuinely unique, and that they love drugs more than other people, and that they are not going to be able to recover.  All of these blocks can keep people away from treatment programs.

Most drug and alcohol rehab programs are twelve step based.  Now some people really like the 12 step program but many people are turned off by it or even are intimidated by the meetings.  Some who suffer from social anxiety would never consider going to one of these meetings, yet this same person might find success in recovery through some other path, such as therapy or counseling.  There are many paths to recovery, but most alcohol and drug programs only offer one solution.

If you do go to rehab and the solution they offer you does not work, what can you do?  Well most people would argue that “you are not ready to recover” and that you should come back to the same solution when you have finally surrendered.  This is good advice, for the most part.  However, if you are convinced that you have truly surrendered, but the recovery solution being offered is not a good fit for you, then your job is to go find a new solution that works for you.  For example, you might seek out a treatment center that is not 12 step based (there are a few of them out there).  Or, you might find a life coach who can push you toward greater personal growth and development.
