Alcohol rehab programs are developed to help alcohol addicts recover from their addiction towards alcohol and substance abuse. The main objective of these programs is to enable the patients to manage their cravings for alcohol without falling prey to excessive withdrawal symptoms and associated side effects of alcohol de-addiction that may often occur during detox. There are different programs that are targeted depending on the extent of the alcohol addiction: inpatient programs, outpatient programs, and dual-diagnosis programs are some of the most commonly employed alcohol de-addiction strategies by rehabilitation facilities.

Inpatient Programs

Inpatient programs refer to the programs that require patients to stay in the alcohol rehabilitation facility for more than 24 hours at a stretch. Patients are usually kept in a safe and secure environment during detox in case withdrawal symptoms or other types of unpleasant side effects occur. Detox is the most crucial phase of any alcohol rehabilitation program because the body rids itself of the toxins to which it has been so accustomed. The patients are more susceptible to self-destruction and suicidal ideation during detox before they become adjusted to functioning without alcohol. Therefore, it is important for healthcare physicians to monitor the patient’s progress around the clock, which is only possible in an inpatient center.

Outpatient Programs

Outpatient programs are designed to help the patients cope with their alcohol addiction problem staying in their familiar surroundings. The patients need to learn how to stay off the bottle and abstain from alcohol while going through their day to day routine. Most outpatient treatments are designed to help the patients psychologically by helping them realize that they do not need alcohol to function normally. Outpatient programs may require the patient to visit the practitioner quite often. Patients receive counseling only for a few hours or sessions and are never required to stay for a night at the treatment center.

Dual Diagnosis Programs

In the early days of alcohol rehab, co-occuring problems of alcohol addiction and behavior disorders were treated separate from each other. However, by the late 80’s, with more and more medical professionals started figuring out that behavior disorders and alcohol addiction were related in many ways. Only then did most doctors and rehab centers start treating alcohol addiction dually. Over a period of time, this became the norm and dual diagnosis treatment emerged as one of the most efficient and time-effective ways of helping patient sail through their condition of alcohol addiction and behavior disorders.

Dual diagnosis programs address the dual problems of alcohol abuse and mental stress at the same time. In most cases of alcohol addiction, patients may undergo a lot of mental stress and trauma either while hitting rock bottom or when they finally start to go through the de-addiction process. In most cases, the stress or behavior disorder needs to be addressed and handled immediately in order for the treatment plan to be effective.

Apart from these “Standard” programs, most personal alcohol rehab centers design customized programs for individuals based on their specific needs, condition and requirements. Clinical de-addiction therapies have come a long way and offer the best possible ways of combating addiction.
