If You Have an Alcohol Problem
What is the difference between an alcohol problem and straight up alcoholism? Well, someone with an alcohol problem might not really be addicted. They might just be a problem drinker who tends to go overboard when they do drink. But they are not addicted, and they can take it or leave it.
If you find that you are having alcohol problems, then you should do an experiment or two. One such experiment is to not drink any alcohol for 30 days straight. This can tell you quite a bit about your condition. You may not learn anything by doing so, but you might learn a lot. For example, you might learn that your problem is much more serious, and that you really may be addicted to alcohol. Or you might find that you quite enjoy being sober and you see several advantages to abstaining entirely from alcohol. So this is a worthwhile experiment to do.
The next experiment you should do is to do another 30 day trial where you limit yourself to one drink per day. Again, you may or may not learn anything from doing this 30 day experiment, but if you carry it out for the full 30 days you are likely to learn something about yourself. You might, again, see that your problem is more serious than you thought, because you may not be able to limit yourself to one drink in every situation (which should be quite easy to do). Or you might find that it is such a colossal struggle to limit it to one drink that it is just easier for you to abstain entirely.
If you think you have an alcoholic problem like this then the best course of action is to just stop drinking altogether. Doing so is the safest route in terms of future consequences. Anyone who has a drinking problem runs the risk of developing full blown alcoholism at any time, should they continue to drink. If they stop drinking though and do not put any more alcohol into their body, then they eliminate this risk and essentially have nothing to worry about.
If you find that you cannot stop on your own without getting help, then you are probably addicted to alcohol and you need to take action to solve your problem. The 2 best suggestions in this case are to go to alcohol rehab or go to an AA meeting. Either of these choices is far better than doing nothing, and either one could get you started on the road to recovery.
