Therefore, I always suggest to people to keep long term treatment as an option for the future. If other methods fail you, you can always try long term later on. Some people disagree with this logic, claiming that relapse is far too dangerous to mess around with.
Long term worked for me. But, I have seen it fail for many people and I know it is not a magic bullet.
But also, tell him to realize that it is not as obstructive to his life as he thinks it will be. He will have more freedom living there then he realizes. And probably plenty of contact with his family as well.
It is a tough decision. I guess I would encourage long term because that is what finally worked for me.....

@ Janet – Long term treatment seems like a huge commitment….it just seems like so drastic of a solution. He would like to come home and go to 2 aa/na meetings a day, intensive outpatient care, and the rehab centers after care program. He has a sponser already and has talked to him consistently while in rehab. I would like him to come home but I really want him to be successful. What are your thoughts on sober living homes

My husband is a 28 day program and they have recommended a sober living home for a couple of months as well as continued intensive outpatient care.
