3 Key Addiction Home Detox Tips You Might Want to Consider

If you are struggling with drug or alcohol addiction, here are some home detox tips that might help you out.

1) The first tip is to avoid detoxing at home altogether. I know that most people reading this are not in a position to go to rehab, as it is expensive and not everyone has cash or insurance.  But it really is the best way in most cases and can greatly increase your chances of success.  If you can find a way to go to rehab, do it.  Call up local treatment centers and find out what your options are.  In some cases you might qualify for treatment or for some sort of assistance that you did not know about.  Worth asking about anyway.

2) The second tip is to insure safety. This should be a top priority for anyone going through detox because in some cases, it is actually dangerous and potentially deadly to stop taking certain drugs cold turkey.  The 3 basic ones are alcohol, Benzodiazepines, and barbiturates.  If you are addicted to any of those substances and you suddenly stop taking them, it can be very dangerous and can potentially kill you.  At the very least you might have a seizure or at least get very sick and dehydrated, which can also be dangerous for your health.

So what to do?  See tip #1 again for starters.  If that doesn’t work, then try to make sure that you stay hydrated with water and get bed rest if your withdrawal is this serious.  If you are visibly shaking from withdrawal then you should probably seek medical attention, even if  you have to go the emergency room.

There is the potential to taper yourself off of medications and even alcohol, but it is pretty much impossible for an addict to do so successfully.  Friends or relatives who are trying to be helpful will not know how much and how often to give you medication in order to taper you down, so this is not really recommended either.  The best option is rehab.  If all else fails, call your doctor and describe your situation to him.

3) The third idea is to focus on sleep. This should be a natural technique that anyone can use to make detox more bearable.  The idea is to simply sleep as much as possible in order to avoid the uncomfortable feelings of detox and also to give your body time to rest and heal.

One technique that works well is to simply stay up for many hours in a row without any sleep, and then when you do go to sleep, it will be for a long time and can potentially get you past the toughest part of your withdrawal.  Timing is everything.
